Brussels (Belgium), 8th January 2009 – Zetes, the leading pan-European supplier of solutions for the automated identification of goods and people, has announced the signing of a second contract with the government of Togo. This contract, which covers the delivery of 500 mobile biometric kits, comes further to the scheme aimed at compiling the electoral registers for which the Togolese authorities had previously called on the services of Zetes in March 2007.
With the Togolese parliamentary elections held in June 2007, Togo was required to conduct a national census of its citizens entitled to the vote with a view to compiling a new electoral register. In order to accomplish this project within the deadlines held out, the CENI (Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante - Independent National Electoral Committee) had concluded a contract with its Congolese counterpart, the CEI (Commission Electorale Indépendante - Independent Electoral Committee) for the loan of around 3,000 biometric kits (designed and supplied by Zetes). These kits had already been used for the enrolment of the voters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Thanks to the latter, Zetes was able to compile details of 3.5 million persons and to put together the electoral registers in the time span of just a month.
Today, the Togolese authorities need to make sure these registers are duly updated. Voters who have since reached legal age must be registered and persons deceased or persons who have lost their right to vote must be deleted from the registers.
Confident in the efficacy of the solution put forward by Zetes, Togo decided to purchase 500 biometric kits in full ownership. These kits are built around software tools developed by Zetes. The validity of the electoral registers is ensured thanks to the AFIS technology, which allows the lists to be deduplicated on the basis of digitised fingerprints.
To date, part of the material has already been delivered. The remainder of the 500 kits will be arriving in Lomé before the end of the first quarter of 2009.
